A Dark, Dark Time in America

American women deserve better. I am sharing an abortion story that is very personal to me to help normalize abortion. Many women you know have had abortions for various reasons, all of which are valid. I spent the last few days in tears watching the news unfold on television. Having lived around the world in highly educated countries, like Denmark and Australia, has given me perspective. The USA is moving backward.

When people hear my American accent, they ask, “Are you Canadian?” so as not to offend me if I were not American. Sometimes it’s embarrassing to be an American abroad, and sometimes it is just too much. Today is one of those days. We can do better, America.

This week, I am heartbroken like many Americans and allies around the world. I cannot believe this. Mom would be crushed if she were still here today.

My mother got married at 19. She was living in and out of poverty without the support of her parents. At times, she and her husband were on drugs and in bad situations. She was also suicidal in her early years.

When she got pregnant, she knew it wasn’t the right time. She terminated the pregnancy.

Down the line, her clouds parted and she filed for divorce. She wanted a better life for herself.

Mom later received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees and remarried at 28. She married a Catholic man, and they went on to have three daughters of their own.
